Labs4rescue receives many inquiries from people wishing to surrender a Lab to us or from groups seeking our assistance placing a Lab. Only Labs with socially acceptable behaviors, which can be responsibly placed, will be offered for adoption.
Please review the appropriate information section below and follow the guidelines provided for your situation.
Labs4rescue Adopters have a contractual obligation to return their dog to Labs4rescue if they are unable to keep the dog for its entire life. Please complete the Owner Release Form to notify us that you intend to return your Lab and to initiate the return process. Upon submitting the form, a copy will be emailed to you and to Labs4rescue. Please print the email copy, sign it and mail it to Labs4rescue, P.O. Box 955, Killingworth, CT 06419.
Only Labs with socially acceptable behaviors, which can be responsibly placed, will be offered for adoption. Please begin by answering the following question: Where did you get your dog? If you acquired your dog from a reputable breeder, you should contact the breeder first since most reputable breeders will take their dogs back if you can't keep them for their entire life. If you acquired your dog from a different rescue group, you should contact them first since you most likely are contractually obligated to return the dog to the original rescue organization.
If neither of these scenarios applies, we may be able to assist you if the dog meets our criteria. The dog must be a pure bred Lab or a very high mix. Since some Lab mixes will not qualify for our program, we need to review several pictures of the dog in order to make a decision. Since we are a rescue without a physical facility to house dogs, your dog would need a place to stay until a foster or adoptive home is found. Are you able to care for the dog until it can be re-homed? If so, please start by sending us the following three high quality digital pictures: 1. a close-up of the face, 2. a view of the face plus chest when the dog is sitting and facing you, and 3. a full body view from the side. Please click here to submit your photos to us. If the dog looks acceptable, you will be notified within 48 hours and then asked to complete the Owner Release Form. Upon submitting the form, a copy will be emailed to you and to Labs4rescue. Please print the email copy, sign it and mail it to Labs4rescue, P.O. Box 955, Killingworth, CT 06419. If you want to surrender a dog that you did NOT acquire from Labs4rescue, the Owner Surrender Fee of $100.00 must accompany your signed release form. Returned checks are subject to an additional $25 fee. Once you complete the form, we will review the information you provided and one of our Local Intake Coordinators will contact you to discuss your case.
Dogs adopted from sources other than Labs4rescue are subject to evaluation and submitting the Owner Release form does not guarantee that Labs4rescue will accept your dog into its program. If Labs4rescue does not accept your dog into its program, your Owner Surrender Fee will be refunded.
If you are a licensed veterinarian wanting assistance placing a stray Lab that does not have an owner, we may be able to assist you if the dog meets our criteria. The dog must be a pure bred Lab or a very high mix. We need to review several pictures of each dog in order to make a decision.
Since we are a rescue without a physical facility, the dog would need a place to stay until a foster or adoptive home is found. Are you able to foster the dog until it is adopted?
We require the following vet work (spay/neuter, vaccines (including kennel cough), heartworm test and treatment if necessary, de-worming, and started on heartworm and flea/tick preventative). An interstate health certificate is required when transport is needed. Temperament and cat testing prior to adoption is also required. Since we NEVER transport intact animals the dog would need to be altered prior to transport. All dogs (including puppies) must be spayed/neutered. Here's another important consideration about the way we work: we do not transport dogs directly from a shelter; we only transport dogs that were living in foster homes or approved boarding facilities for at least two weeks. Please do not ask us to waive these medical and quarantine requirements.
We will assume the transportation expenses to New England if the dog is adopted through Labs4rescue, placed on our adoption contract, and transported by one of our two authorized transporters. Please note that our transports have strict routes and timetables and you will have to deliver the dog to the transport at the assigned time and place depending on your location.
If you're interested in working with us please start by sending us the following three high quality digital pictures: 1. a close-up of the face, 2. a view of the face plus chest when the dog is sitting and facing you, and 3. a full body view from the side. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue, we would greatly appreciate you donating your professional fees and services for vetting the stray dog in question.
If you represent an Animal Shelter and/or Rescue Group wanting assistance placing a Lab, we may be able to assist you if the dog meets our criteria. The dog must be a pure bred Lab or a very high mix. We need to review several pictures of each dog in order to make a decision.
