Shug
Shug was found as a stray. Labs4rescue volunteer Marla, got an urgent plea to save her from the shelter last Tuesday night. While she had quickly became a shelter favorite, she needed to be moved, as she was in dire risk of being euthanized. When Marla picked her up and got her to to safety on Wednesday late afternoon, she immediately saw that she had a bulging eye. Marla called her vet who examined her the next morning. The vet recommended removing her eye, as Shug had glaucoma, which was too far gone for medication to help. While on the surgery table they saw her belly was large and swollen. She also had a bloody discharge and the vet said it was pyometra which is a life-threatening emergency, as when the uterus is so badly infected if it bursts, it will kill the dog. Marla's vet said the rule is: “Don’t let the sun go down on pyometra, without surgery to remove it”, as the chances of them surviving to the next day is very low. The pyometra surgery and spay was performed right away and then the eye removed. When Marla picked up Shug the day of surgery she was anxious and panting. That is a lot of procedures for a dog to have happen in such a short amount of time, so that was understandable. Shug is on antibiotics and pain meds and beginning to eat again. Shug is very calm and sweet and loves to be petted by anyone who will pet her. When you stop she touches you to see if you will pet again. She is a Velcro dog and follows Marla's every step. She will make someone a wonderful companion when she recovers. The vet thinks she is 3-4 years old, weighs 69 lbs and heartworm negative. Some of that weight might be the infected uterus, so she may weigh a bit less now. When Shug recovers, she will be ready to join your family. We want her to find the absolute best home, so she will forget the pain, and from now on, know only LOVE. If you would like more information on Shug, please email Marla at mclabs4rescue@gmail.com.
