Labs4rescue Volunteer Activities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Labs4rescue. Please join our group by helping Labs in need. To become a volunteer for Labs4Rescue please complete our Volunteer Application. Our biggest need is foster homes and we have a great system that makes it easy for you to help! There are many other rewarding opportunities available for those interested in volunteering; please read Bethany Hickey's account of her experience as a volunteer.

Home Visits

We conduct home visits for all Labs4rescue adoptions. Home visits allow us to check several items in relationship to the adoption of a rescue dog. Initially we look to see if the adoptive family currently has a veterinarian or has selected a vet to provide the necessary and preventative treatment the dog will need.

Second, we verify where the dog will be kept. All Labs4rescue dogs must be permitted to stay inside at night as well as during the day if the adoption family is at work. It is important to find out if the dog will be considered "a member of the family." This is also a good time to discuss nutritional needs, housebreaking, etc. with the adoptive family and to see if they have any questions.

Lastly, we would like to know the exercise plan for the dog. Labs are active and require exercise. Urge the family to participate in obedience training. Discuss local options. Give the family several options on how they may contact Labs4rescue with any questions or concerns. Back to top.

Labs4rescue participates in various showcases, adoption days and dog fairs. We always can use an additional hand to hold a leash, circulate, and offer information regarding our organization. Back to top.

Join our Fundraising Committee

Labs4rescue recently started a Fundraising Committee to help raise funds for the costs of operations. The committee consists of four sub-committees. We are always looking for new members so please complete a Volunteer Application and indicate which sub-committee you are interested in joining. While the committee is based out of Connecticut, many of the efforts are done electronically so everyone can participate!
Special Events Committee
Members will lend support to Adoption Coordinators at monthly adoption events. The committee has pledged to run three special events a year strictly for the purpose of fundraising for Labs4rescue which include a Doggie Walk-a-Thon.

Partnerships & Grants Committee
Members will build relationships with businesses and organizations to partner up with Labs4rescue to help create fundraising opportunities. Examples would be recruiting vendors to rent space at our special events, store contributions based referrals and sales from the Labs4rescue Web site. One of the committee’s latest accomplishments is a cell phone recycling program where Labs4rescue benefits from every contribution. The committee also needs help researching grant opportunities and applying for them.

Building Committee
Members will work to create awareness that there is a need for a facility to house our dogs and initiate efforts to raise funds exclusively for a facility.

Publicity Committee
Members on this committee support all the efforts of the above committees by creating awareness through promotional materials, Web strategies and media relations.

Distribute our Press Kit to Local TV and Radio Stations

Please help Labs4rescue by distributing our press kit to Program Directors at your local TV and radio stations.
Instructions For Use:

Research your local radio stations and identify the Program Director, who is typically in charge of public service announcements. Visit http://www.ontheradio.net/Stations.aspx as a starting point for this information.
Obtain the Program Director's full contact information, including email address. If email is not listed, call the station to obtain it.
Tailor the cover letter directly to this contact and add your contact information to the other materials. Remember to remove the red highlighting!
Email all materials to this contact and follow up with a phone call to make sure it has been received and whether or not they prefer a CD of the public service announcement and a hard copy of the materials.
If the contact needs a CD, save the mp3 file to a CD and send with a follow up note with your contact information.

The key here is personal interaction with the Program Director. They receive stacks of Public Service Announcements each week and we need to make ours stand out from the pile. Your personal phone call or visit could make the difference in the message getting aired.
This may seem like a lot of steps, but in fact, it's so easy and takes very little effort. Getting the word out about Labs4rescue is the first step in saving more lives. Let's work together to accomplish this goal.
